Golf Course Renovation

PROJECT PROFILE

The City of Des Moines owns three (3) golf
courses which are operated by C-Corporation, a Des Moines-based golf management company. Bright-Grandview Golf Course was design by Warren Dickinson in 1902 and is a typical “golden age” classic golf course with its tree lined fairways and small domed greens. Herfort Norby was hired by the City of Des Moines to assist in the design and placement of a new clubhouse and to make the necessary adjustments to the golf course required to accommodate the proposed improvements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Herfort Norby’s responsibilities included the preparation of a site plan and grading plan which provided for additional parking and the addition of a driving range to improve overall course revenue. Proposed recommendations included moving the parking lot the north side of the clubhouse site and moving the clubhouse to the west to allow for the construction of a new practice green and improved cart storage.

In addition, the proposed No. 9 green was reconstructed to improve visibility and safety and the greenside bunkers were constructed with flat sand and grass faces to reduce maintenance and to enhance their historic character.

Herfort Norby worked closely with City staff, the clubhouse architect and the golf course management company to complete the design and coordinate the bidding and construction of the golf course improvements. The golf course improvement project was competitively bid and was completed on time and on budget.
